The author's fundamental position is that conventional definitions of—and barriers between—magic and mentalism are in fact stodgy old constructs that exist only in the confines of the traditions of magic, and have no bearing on the actual potential of magical performance. The real "rare" version of "Pure Effect" is the first spiral bound edition which I believe was only available after his lecture at the International Magic Convention, and possibly at one of Duncan Trillo's Mind Magic events. Brown frankly appears to attach little importance—but is in fact a theatrical question, and that the traditional effects and approaches of mentalism, by their very nature, have too long lived their meager lives out somewhere between the desert towns of Dullsville and Endoftheline. I believe the first edition, self-published by Derren, includes one or two sections that were withheld from the later editions (I have never had a first edition to check! I don't believe that "magic takes us back to our infantile state of astonishment," or that, even if it did, this is a desirable goal.

This is, stated baldly, unquestionably the most provocative magic book I have read in a very long time. Although it is the concepts within this book that I found most thought-provoking and riveting, that is not to suggest that there is not superb and useable material to be found in its pages as well. I've just borrowed Pure Effect, Absolute Magic and related volume, The Mental Mysteries of Hector Chadwick (numbered 1st ed), from a friend.

I read Absolute Magic sitting by a pool in Las Vegas and then went to see a mentalism show and there were so many things in the show which were in the book as examples of horrific presentation that I almost walked out!I NEVER expect to be reading the actual truth about this or any other "career" decision made by an entertainer. Arguably, getting something for totally free will get a true MoneySaver's heart pumping faster than any cardio workout ever could. Also, one should not discount the fact that Derren Brown thinks it's very funny to stir up trouble occasionally.
