About this deal

Influential showcases the reality of being an influencer, the darkness of it all whilst also finding the light at the end of the tunnel with some help from new friends outside of her social media bubble. Maybe I didn't experience online hate, but I was bullied for many years of my life, so I couldn't help thinking of myself and what I felt back then. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated!

The book’s relevance in today’s society, where the lines between real-life and online personas blur, cannot be overstated. When I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about its characters, I loved it’s ability to tackle the societal issues (racism, sexualisation, alcoholism etc.

Influential is a hard, real look at the online phenomenon of influencers, and the effect their perfect, filtered lives have on the youngest of them. This book was one of my most anticipated releases of this year and I would say it was good not nothing groundbreaking but I am not mad that I read it. Holly Bourne is a great advocate of young teens reading about difficult issues as a 'safe space' to consider and discuss those issues, this book does a great job in that sphere. While fame and wealth sounds appealing this shows the reality of all that and will maybe get people to see what's behind the influencer mask.

Polly Crosby tells ReadingZone about her novel, This Tale is Forbidden (Scholastic), a fractured fairy tale set in a dystopian world. The last two months I’ve been unwell, one thing after another, flu and such and it’s taken me a while to bounce back to normal. All she has to do is remember who she really is, who is there for her, and that she can always talk to her parents. Her mother’s high on a new campaign that offers ‘stratospheric’ influence, yet Almond’s falling apart.

And the overall plots and storyline was really great, it was interesting and wild yet still realistic and I appreciated that a lot.

In an age where content is (said to be) king, fear of missing out drives scrolling, and so many of our young people are targeted by the current crop of celebrity influencers, this novel offers the reader the opportunity to rethink their views on the lives being portrayed. Mel and Sid are determined to do this together, but they soon discover that pregnancy is totally different for boys and girls. This book was does a really good job at reflecting the pressure of young people and young girls to always be this perfect idea of what society wants from people and how it is getting harder for people to understand what is real and what is fake and the pressure and the impact of people's mental health that has.

Her love-hate relationship with her mother is especially compelling, and I thought Eve was a wonderful character despite her flaws. I can't think of anything worse than having my whole life online and yet so many people are born into that now. I don't know what I was expecting going into this, but I have to say it absolutely exceeded any expectations I could have had.Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. Almond is an influencer, it’s maybe not her choice, but it’s how it is, and she just has to get on with it. million followers is all she knows and the longest conversation she has with her mum is about follower count and does this photo look okay for this campaign. This story skillfully and sensitively manages the emotional debate over the pro's and con's of babies and abortions, not always predictable, and very relatable.
