No matter; as a leading man, Cruise is always going to be himself anyway, so the ghostlike qualities built in to his character take on their own mythical qualities that allow both Cruise and Reacher to get the job done. Again seemingly, the killer has been positively identified and apprehended and is dead-to-rights guilty. So begins an extraordinary chase for the truth, pitting Reacher against an unexpected enemy with a skill for violence, a secret to keep and a target on Reacher's back. Turning up in Margave, Georgia, Jack doesn’t even carry a bag with him, but his first issue is to address a moron who’s hassling his girlfriend. Boasting all the amazing action set-pieces introduced in the first film entry, this sequel goes far and beyond to live up to the now-iconic name of Jack Reacher.

Okay, well, in the first episode there’s humour from Jack, but after that, this aspect calms down a bit as it gets into the plot. S. army sniper James Barr, faced with the prospect of life in prison or even death row, jots down a mysterious note: ‘Get Jack Reacher’.Given that the titular hero is meant to be over 6ft tall, and Cruise is 5’7, he was criticised for that. Taking up the reins of his predecessor Christopher McQuarrie, Edward Zwick finds himself in the director’s chair and takes the viewer on an unforgettable ride. The story takes a drastic twist as Reacher finds himself working with the defense attorney to proclaim her client’s innocence. Killing Floor is the first in the series of Lee Child’s novels for the character, so I presume if this is a hit, they’ll follow on with subsequent books, but after two episodes, I’m not particularly drawn into the plot.
