About this deal

It is imperative that chemical pesticides are not used in conjunction with any biological control methods as nematodes will also be killed. Adult vine weevils nibble on your plant leaves at night, but it’s actually the larvae that do most of the damage by eating your roots in the soil. Because vine weevil is such a destructive pest, every effort must be taken to control both the adults and the soil-borne grubs.

Nematodes work for six weeks, but give up to four months since they prevent the larvae from hatching into adults and causing another lifecycle. Using the measure provided, mix 60 ml of BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer with 1 litre of water in a watering can or mixing vessel.Encourage wildlife in the garden. Vine weevils and their grubs are eaten by a variety of predators such as birds, frogs, toads, shrews, hedgehogs and predatory ground and rovebeetles Bug killers are not all bad but lots are. It all depends on how they work and how they are applied. Eggs start off white, but turn brown before they hatch, making them very difficult to spot in soil.

Vine weevil is a garden plant pest problem that can be difficult to control. Gardeners with vine weevil will need to take measures to control them.Weevils are a group of several families of beetles in thesuperfamily Curculionoidea, there are more than 500 species in the UK. All feed on plant material, mostly live plants but a few feed on dry seeds (grain weevils) or rotting wood. Most do not cause noticeable damage to garden plants and several species are uncommon.Vine weevil is classified in a subfamily of the known as the broad nosed weevils (Entiminae), so called because the of the broad snout (rostrum) these weevils have. There are over 100 species in this subfamily in Britain. More information on broad nosed weevils from UK Beetles. Vine Weevils are particularly fond of plants in pots or containers, where the roots are restricted. If containers are large enough then place one trap within the confines of the container’s soil surface.

Dilute the concentrated liquid as recommended on the label and water it on to the compost in the containers. It works in the roots and the compost, where it will protect against vine weevil and other compost-dwelling insect plant pests for up to 2 months.

Their mouths don’t allow them to start biting in the middle of leaves, so if you see this it’s another pest, such as a caterpillar or slug. Wilting plants Thoroughly rinse the watering can used after use and pour the washings over compost with ornamental plants in pots.

After use, theNematop® Weevil-Stop trap can be disposed of or burned just like any other waste wood material. Leaf damage is visibly obvious as the adult weevils nibble at the edge of leaves, causing irregular-shaped notches in the leaf margins, during the summer months. However, root damage caused by the young larvae is not always immediately obvious. The plump, creamy white legless grubs have light brown heads and are up to 10mm long. They are likely to be found among the roots, where they feed voraciously. There are a range of options. The most direct is to keep an eye open for the adults and destroy any that you find. As the adult weevils tend to feed during the night, it's worth going out with a torch. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer can be applied to pots or direct to the soil anytime from March to November. It is highly recommended to apply first in the spring and then again in the autumn to prevent the vine weevil grubs from overwintering in the soil or compost, ready to wreak havoc again in the following spring. Note that the nematodes are only active when soil temperatures are above 5°C. For the most effective control, simply add the nematodes to a watering can and apply directly to the open soil or directly to pots, tubs and containers.

Vine weevils are a devastating plant pest. Suddenly otherwise healthy-looking plants wilt and collapse and no amount of watering will help them recover. The reason? Vine weevil grubs have eaten all the roots.
