About this deal

Organic Fish, Blood and Bone Feed has been used as a garden fertiliser for as long as any gardener can remember and the balanced nutrient spread of this most traditional of plant feeds makes it ideal for use all around the garden. When using before planting or sowing apply Blood Fish & Bone at 140g/m² and lightly fork or rake into the soil. When using this product as a top dressing apply at 70g/m² and lightly fork into the soil. In a previous article, I talked about the various element deficiencies that plants can suffer from. To overcome these deficiencies, we need fertilisers that particular add the main macronutrients of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Do not forget to feed your soil This means you can use bone meal on its own in autumn to prepare the soil for next year. It has an NPK ratio of 3.5:18:0.

Do not exceed the appropriate application rate. Increasing the dosage may result in damage to your plants Mineral uptake will be influenced by soil temperature, water content, pH and concentration of nutrients already present in the soil or compost. The fertilisers must be added when the plant needs it; too much fertiliser will not be uptaken by the plants but will run off and leach in the rain, and be wasted. As the product isn’t a liquid, there’s less runoff and wastage too. 2) It makes for a Perfect Soil Improver/Base Feed My pet hate is liquid fertilisers that are so strong, they burn the foliage or, worse, get washed away as soon as it rains. Do not exceed the appropriate application rate. Increasing the dosage may result in damage to your plants.

Each batch that is made will be different and will depend on the manufacturers’ specifications, but ballpark figures can be used. It is important to use the fertilizer when the plant demands it. Each soil has also a saturation level of nutrients it can absorb: when there is too much fertilizer in the ground the plants will not use it and the precious fertilizer will run off or leach. Soil bacteria use some of the fertilizers, in particular fish meal, for their own growth and well being which encourages early season microbial life.

As you can see both products have their own merits, and its use is dependent if you want to go down the organic route or inorganic route, With fish, blood and bone the ratio of NPK will change with the manufacturer and the batch made and so will provide NPK of different levels, which may not work as well for plants suffering from major deficiencies of these elements.

Land where the product has been applied should not be used for grazing or cropping for feeding stuffs within the following periods:

Can be used all around the garden: Bedding plants, flowers, bushes, trees and conifers, fruit and vegetables. How often to applyYou can use this type of fertiliser on crops as well as ornamental plants. It’s safe and natural. 4) It’s Sold in Large Quantities Can be used as a base dressing before laying new turf or lawn seed to encourage strong root growth.

Fish meal is the leftover and unwanted products from the fishing industry, as more waste is produced than actually fish eaten. The unwanted fish, fish bones and fish trimmings are dried, pressed and grounded into the final product. Fishbones are a great fertilizer Blood Fish & Bone is an organic-based general purpose plant food which provides the major nutrients required for strong healthy growth. This granular fertiliser contains three active ingredients - nitrogen, phosphate and potassium. The nitrogen encourages strong growth and green, rich foliage whilst the slow release phosphate increases root growth. Levington® Fish, Blood & Bone Multi Purpose Plant Food can be applied prior to sowing or planting and as needed throughout the growing season. Use every time you are preparing the soil for planting. Sprinkle evenly over the soil and mix in well. Water well after planting out, especially in dry weather.

Growmore or National growmore to give its proper title, is an inorganic alternative to fish, blood and bone. It is a relatively modern invention due to necessity during the Second World War, as part of the dig for victory campaign, where potash was in great shortage. Potash was normally minded in Germany and as a result of war it was not readily available, and alternatives had to be found. A. Remove any visible granules and heavily water the area to dissolve and wash through excess product. They are both just as effective as each other, the choice of which one to use is based on your preference. They are both short term fertilisers, only provided enough food for plants for 4 to 6 weeks. If you are looking for more long term fertilizers, which release their nutrients over a long period of time, then I suggest you read my article on slow-release fertilisers. WHAT IS FISH, BLOOD AND BONE FERTILIZERS? This is where balanced fertilizers that are added as a granular feed around the plant to supply the necessary nutrients, which can feed the plant up to 6 weeks. This dry material that is applied to the compost gradually dissolves and is uptaken by the plants. THERE ARE TWO COMMON GRANULAR FEEDS
