Los geht’s in dem hübschen Kurort Thonon-les-Bains an den Ufern des Genfer Sees. Mit seinem milden Klima und der schönen Landschaft bietet sich das Städtchen hervorragend für einige Tage zum Entspannen an. Ein empfehlenswerter zentral gelegener Campingplatz ist das Camping La Dranse Vacances André Trigano.

Andere bekende bergpassen die met de route bezocht worden zijn de Col du Galibier van 2642 m hoogte, de Col du Latuaret van 2057 m hoogte, de Col d’Izoard van 2361 m hoogte, de Col de Vars van 2108 m hoogte en de Col de la Cayolle van 2326 m hoogte. Het laatste deel richting Briançon doe je een tweede park aan als je langs het noordelijke deel van het Parc national des Écrins rijdt, met het Meije massief en de Barre des Écrins in zicht. In Saint-Martin-Vésubie begin je goed te merken dat je je meer richting de Côte d’Azur aan het begeven bent. Hier vind je een combinatie van bergwoningen in een meer mediterrane stijl, met luxere bouwwerken die niet misplaatst zouden zijn langs de kust.

De gehele route is bewegwijzerd met de bruine borden die de toeristische route van de Route des Grandes Alpes aanduiden, vanaf Thonon-les-Bains tot aan Nice.Vanaf hier begin je aan de trek langs de hoogste bergpas van de Franse Alpen, de 2770 m hoge Col de l’Iseran. Na deze pas blijf je de weg volgen tot aan Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis, gelegen op 1400 m hoogte.
