We might call it a cantata constructed round a series of variations on the "Joy" theme. But this is rather a loose formulation, at least by comparison with the way in which many twentieth-century critics have tried to codify the movement's form. Thus there have been interminable arguments as to whether it should be seen as a kind of sonata form (with the "Turkish" music of bar 331, which is in B ♭ major, functioning as a kind of second group), or a kind of concerto form (with bars 1–207 and 208–330 together making up a double exposition), or even a conflation of four symphonic movements into one (with bars 331–594 representing a Scherzo, and bars 595–654 a slow movement). The reason these arguments are interminable is that each interpretation contributes something to the understanding of the movement, but does not represent the whole story. Reportedly, the scherzo was completely interrupted at one point by applause. Either at the end of the scherzo or the end of the symphony (testimonies differ), Beethoven was several bars off and still conducting; the contralto Caroline Unger walked over and gently turned Beethoven around to accept the audience's cheers and applause. According to the critic for the Theater-Zeitung, "the public received the musical hero with the utmost respect and sympathy, listened to his wonderful, gigantic creations with the most absorbed attention and broke out in jubilant applause, often during sections, and repeatedly at the end of them." [22] The audience acclaimed him through standing ovations five times; there were handkerchiefs in the air, hats, and raised hands, so that Beethoven, who they knew could not hear the applause, could at least see the ovations. Inside No. 9 is an anthology series, with each episode featuring a new story, with a new setting and new characters. [11] Episodes run roughly thirty minutes each, with the self-contained story reaching a conclusion. [12] [13] The stories are linked primarily by the fact that each has an element of the story linked to the number 9, be that a mansion, a dressing room or even a shoe, size 9. Almost every episode stars Reece Shearsmith or Steve Pemberton, and regularly both. [14] Each episode is effectively a short play. Some episodes take place in real-time, following half an hour in the lives of the characters. [15] Every episode of Inside No. 9 features an ornamental hare somewhere on-screen. [16] [17] [18] According to Pemberton, "Because each episode is so wildly different there was nothing really linking them other than the fact they were all inside a Number Nine, I just thought it would be nice to have an object that you could hide and just have there on every set." [16] There is, however, no particular significance to the hare itself. [17] [18] Carrie ( Morgana Robinson), Patricia ( Felicity Kendal), Maurice (Shearsmith), Kenneth (Pemberton) and Jean ( Fiona Shaw) attend a private retrospective art exhibition. They are met by the waitress Bea ( Montserrat Lombard), but none knows why they have been invited. David (Shearsmith), a stay-at-home dad, finds a man's shoe while out jogging. He becomes fixated on finding the shoe's owner, straining his relationship with his wife Louise ( Keeley Hawes).

In 1907, the Presbyterian pastor Henry van Dyke Jr. wrote the hymn " Joyful, Joyful, we adore thee" while staying at Williams College. [83] The hymn is commonly sung in English-language churches to the "Ode to Joy" melody from this symphony. [84] Year-end tradition [ edit ] Schuller, Gunther (10 December 1998). An international collaboration between Philips and the Sony Corporation lead to the creation of the compact disc. The author explains how it came about Although most of his major works had been premiered in Vienna, Beethoven was keen to have his latest composition performed in Berlin as soon as possible after finishing it, as he thought that musical taste in Vienna had become dominated by Italian composers such as Rossini. [11] When his friends and financiers heard this, they urged him to premiere the symphony in Vienna in the form of a petition signed by a number of prominent Viennese music patrons and performers.
