About this deal

The story is not new but how it evolves is at least to me. The main character USA young women who is half tiger and half wolf. It is a cruel world and her life is an example of how cruel it is. Tigers and wolves are two very different animals with unique social behaviors. Tigers are typically solitary creatures, preferring to hunt and live alone. They have one exception to this rule – a mother tiger will stay with her cubs until they’re old enough to fend for themselves. She’ll teach them how to hunt and protect them from predators during this time.

A new study led by by Professor Andrew Pask and myself at the University of Melbourne, published in the journal Genome Research, has made the first headway into answering this question by comparing the complete DNA sequences of the thylacine and wolf. Intensive hunting on Tasmania is generally blamed for its extinction, but other contributing factors were disease, the introduction of and competition with dingoes, human encroachment into its habitat and climate change. The remains of the last known thylacine were discovered at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in 2022. Since extinction there have been numerous searches and reported sightings of live animals, none of which have been confirmed.

These elements, called 'TWARs' (thylacine-wolf accelerated regions), show evidence of natural selection in both species, but lay outside of the much-better understood protein-coding regions of the genome.

If a cougar gets too close to a wolf’s territory or young, then the wolf may fight to defend the area; the same is true if a wolf encroaches on a cougar’s territory. A 2005 study showed that the thylacine had a high bite force quotient of 166 which are similar to that of most quolls, indicating that it may have been able to hunt larger prey relative to its body size. [85] A 2007 study also suggested that it would have had a much stronger bite force than a dingo of similar size, though this particular study argued that the thylacine would have hunted smaller prey. [81] A biomechanical analysis of the 3D skull model suggested that the thylacine would have likely consumed smaller prey, with its skull displaying high levels of stress that are not suited to withstand forces, and with its bite forces being estimated at a smaller value than that of Tasmanian devils. [82] A 2014 study compared the skull of a thylacine with that of modern dasyurids and an earlier thylacinid taxon Nimbacinus based on biomechanical analysis of their 3D skull models; the authors suggested that while Nimbacinus was suited to hunt large prey with a maximum muscle force of 651N (66kg f; 146lb f) which are similar to that of large Tasmanian devils, the thylacine skull displayed a much higher stress in all areas compared to its relatives due to its longer snout. [83] If the thylacine were indeed specialised for small prey, this specialisation likely made it susceptible to small disturbances to the ecosystem. [82] By comparing the entire growth series from newborns to adults, we were able to visualise tiny differences in development that pinpoint when and where in the skull adaptations to carnivore arise on a cellular level.A new collaborative study led by researchers at the University of Melbourne used state of the art technologies such as micro-CT scanning and digital reconstructions to compare the skulls of the Tasmanian tiger and wolf across their early development and into adulthood, finding that they are even more similar than meets the eye.
